LAWRENCE, KS, October 5th, 2009 - The University of Kansas on Monday began construction of a $7.25 million complex that will provide space and support for fledgling biotech companies.

A groundbreaking was held for the Bioscience & Technology Business Center, which will be a 200,000-square-foot facility in the western part of KU’s campus upon completion next year.

The center will provide lab and office space for startup ventures based on KU research, as well as other technology businesses collaborating with KU research or bigger technology firms.

Among the groups helping to finance the project are the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce, the Kansas Bioscience Authority, the city of Lawrence, Douglas County, KU and KU Endowment. The Lawrence-Douglas County Biosciences Authority’s board of directors is an investor and an owner of the facility.

“This project is a partnership that marks the beginning of a strong new business relationship between KU and the community,” LaVerne Epp, chairman and president of the Lawrence-Douglas County Biosciences Authority’s board, said in a statement.

The center will be next to several research buildings and the new School of Pharmacy under construction. The facility will have the space to double in size if demand grows.

The Lawrence Regional Technology Center will manage the center, providing tenants with business development services and access to capital.
